TROY TREE SCULPTURE PROJECT

Every year the city loses a tree or two to disease, old age or damage. This year city of Troy will have 20 or so empty tree wells. We are inviting artists and community members and groups to fill these spaces with sculpture.....which may or may not resemble a tree. The sculptures, however, should be vertical, fit in the center of the 3' and 4' square spaces and be no more than 14" in diameter which will allow room for car doors to open and pedestrians to disembark and for both vehicle and sculpture to remain undamaged.
For those interested in participating in this project - we will supply one 6 foot 'sonna tube' per participant to use in creating an art piece. These tubes come in varying widths. There will be some recycled paints available for use and participants are encouraged to canvas their neighborhoods for additional cast off materials to use in their projects. This web site will list any materials that have been donated for such use. Participants may use more then one sonna tube, however, they must supply additional tubes. Tubes may be painted, cut or pierced, found objects attached and any variety of material used with the exception of rusted or sharp and/ or protruding materials. Horizontal dimensions may not exceed 20" from base to 6'. From 6' to 10', the horizontal dimension may not exceed 60". The entire height of the sculpture may not exceed 10'. Participants may use other materials for their 'tree' sculptures, such as 3/4 plywood, plexiglass, planed and natural wood, iron and other metals, . however, must submit a proposal describing the project, with sketches, a list of materials, and finshed dimensions.
DEADLINE for proposal submission is March 20, 2009 Download submission form.
