Fulton Street Gallery

Mission

is a non-profit community gallery, made up of volunteers, artists & non artists that has successfully provided venues for visual and performing artists since 1994. We initiate many programs in our physical and cyber spaces, the latest being RE-ARTING TROY, a public art initiative which will bring art throughout Troy by the spring of 2009. Collaboration has been the key to our success over the years and FSG is dedicated to helping foster connection within the arts communities of Troy and the greater Capital Region.   Fulton Street Gallery’s mission is to promote the knowledge and appreciation of art in the general public and to stimulate and support the work of artists in the Capital Region  by encouraging and maintaining high standards of art through the production and coordination of exhibitions of artistic works of varied media. Our mission is also to produce an innovative, experimental and educational atmosphere where artists can exhibit, work and interact with other artists and expose and educate the general public about art.

DIRECTOR:  Colleen Fraser Skiff  -  BIO  & RESUME

FSG is in its 12th year and the Broadway Gallery Membership is 14 years old. They say that adolescence is a trying time for both parents and teen. It has also been said that a parent's job is to guide, offer a nurturing environment and stability while the teen explores choices and discovers their strengths and weaknesses.  FSG knows who it is and where it wants to be and we're very aware of what our peers need from us. FSG is not a parent, it's a constantly evolving creative entity which needs its peers to thrive and survive. And over the years we've interacted with many, had some amazing moments and made life long friendships. We've stumbled a few times, but have had no major catastrophes and have created a pretty stable and steady venue for artists. Because we crave adventure, we've hosted a wide variety of media and genre from fantasy to political, mental health and body image. It has been an educational venue for me, post graduate work in real life, in real time. I can learn while I work at something I love.   FSG has always been supported by amazingly gifted and giving people, who have expanded my life in immeasurable ways. I'm looking forward to the developmental stage, and further adventures. It's a great time to become involved in an organization which has vision, creativity and stamina.

HISTORY

Fulton Street Gallery is an offshoot of the Broadway Gallery Membership Group, Inc., a non-profit arts organization founded in 1994 by Colleen and a smal group of regional artists. The non-profit was based in Albany at the home of the RCA dog "Nipper" until the fall of 1995, when the building flooded and we were forced to find a new home. During our run in Albany, the core group produced shows for its members, and numerous open juried and theme exhibitions for the artists community at large. We worked with the Womens Caucus of Art, Tsehaya and Company Art/Partners, the Hermitage Artists, sponsored a fund raiser for the homeless, held open figurative drawing classes and sponsored a 3 day arts festival. For the next two years, we held members meetings at the Bethlehem Public Library and exhibited work at alternative spaces in the Capital Region  which included sposoring a national figurative exhibition at the Rathbone Gallery at the Junior College of Albany (now known as the SAGE Colleges. ) To prepare for the latter, in March of 1997, we rented space iin Troy on the 4th floor of the Illium building on Fulton Street. This space was a former dentist office with numerous small rooms with sinks. Our meetings were held in the reception area and the small rooms quickly became artists studios. The artists expanded into larger rooms throughout the building and we, the non-profit, expanded to a street level space, which became the Fulton Street Gallery.

Partnerships

FSG has enjoyed working in partnership with the local arts councils and the many colleges and universities of this region.   Support comes through individual contributions, corporate under writing, grants and members fees. We set our juried fees by the guidelines set by the New York Council for the Arts and all proceeds from shows are used for juror salaries and operating costs.

Community

Our past exhibitions have covered a wide variety of topics which include women's issues, the homeless, body images, health issues, technology, urban devlopment, cultural influences, and more. The Gallery is located in the historic downtown, an area that was once considered by local and federal governments as impoverished and in need of economic development.  The programs and services at the Gallery benefit all socio-economic groups. We provide small group workshops on everything from bookkeeping to framing artwork.  Artists share models and other resources, and the Gallery provides art equipment for artist use. We also take well below normal commissions on the sale of art.

Exhibitions

Each year we offer a variety of exhibitions — two international, two regional (open or themed) and solo and small group. We serve about 200 artists annually.  Any restrictions on eligibility in participating in any exhibition would be posted in a prospectus of individual shows. Generally, all exhibitions are open to artists over eighteen years of age who reside anywhere in the world and are posted on this site.

Membership

Membership is open to all at: $25 for student and senior, $35 for artists, $50 for family and $100 for businesses. Members receive a 10% discount on purchases and workshops and a 25% commission is taken on their work that is sold at the gallery. Members’ works are also eligible to show in the Airport Departure Gallery, if selected by their director. There is an exhibition of members work every two years. And, members receive newsletters, either hard copy or on-line and e-mails of upcoming events.
